Aloha from the Hawaii DU Team!
On this website we provide publicly available information on Depleted Uranium to assist you in determining your own opinion on the danger of Depleted Uranium. Knowledge is Power! The Military’s Illegal Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Warfare Attack on Hawaii!
by Paka
The military targeted Hawaii as a toxic waste dump for poisonous warfare agents from at least as far back as 1925! The military intentionally dumped thousands of tons of munitions and bulk containers of chemical warfare agents on and around Hawaii. 85 years later the military isn’t exactly sure where all of their poisons and munitions were dumped.
In the 1960s, the United States military intentionally used Hawaii’s environment as their own private laboratory, and Hawaii’s residents as their lab rats! Chemical and biological warfare experiments were secretly conducted in Hawaii and on Hawaii residents. Some of the experiments had codes names such as Autumn Gold, Errand Boy, Flower Drum, Fearless Johnny, Half Note, Big Tom, Folded Arrow, Blue Tango, Yellow Leaf Phase A, Yellow Leaf Phase B, Pine Ridge, Red Oak Phase I, Green Mist, and Tall Timber. Known chemical, biological, and radiological warfare agents secretly unleashed on Hawaii included:
1) Ester of Benzilic Acid (an incapacitating agent designed to cause stupor, confusion, and hallucinations);
2) Bacillus globigii (associated with acute infections of the ear, brain lining, urinary tract, lungs, heart valve, and the bloodstream);
3) Aerosolized Zinc Cadmium Sulfide (National Research Council committee focused on as potentially most toxic);
4) Tiara (no further information is available);
5) Serratia marcescens (causes acute infections of the urinary tract, lung, bloodstream);
6) E. coli (causes acute infection, especially when it gains access to the urinary tract, lung, and bloodstream); and
7) Sarin Nerve Agent (volatile and lethal nerve agent).
In addition, Agents Orange, M-3140, TORDON ester, 2, and 4-D ester, 2, 4, and 5-T ester, as well as agents Blue, White, diquat, paraquat, PCP, Picloram, and Endothall were intentionally unleased into Hawaii’s environment. According to military documents, the primary reason that these warfare agents were unleashed in Hawaii was to determine the dispersion on these warfare agents!
The military also unleashed on Hawaii in the 1960’s what may be the longest lasting contaminant the world has ever known, Depleted Uranium! Radiation contamination from Depleted Uranium has a half-life of 4.5 BILLION years!
In the 1960s, the Atomic Energy Commission, predecessor of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, licensed the military use of Depleted Uranium (DU) spotting rounds in Hawaii for training with the Davy Crockett weapon system. The spotting rounds were used to determine the estimated impact zone of the Davy Crockett weapon system’s 76-pound nuclear bomb.
Hawaii’s residents were never informed that DU was ever used in Hawaii. In fact, whenever questioned about their use of DU in Hawaii in the past the military has consistently denied even possessing DU in Hawaii.
Environmental and native Hawaiian groups obtained information that the Army had infact used DU in Hawaii during the 1960’s. Mr. Kyle Kajihiro of American Friends Service Committee Hawaii helped to pull the blanket off this sleeping lie by holding a press conference to inform the public of the presence of military DU in Hawaii. Only hours later the Army came out with their own press conference to “confirm that DU is present in Hawaii.”
Like their secret experiments on Hawaii’s environment and residents, and their massive dumping of explosive munitions, poisonous chemicals, and biological warfare agents from the 1920s through the 1960’s, the military hoped to keep yet another toxic assault on Hawaii secret. Thanks to to environmental and native Hawaiian organizations that acquired the information, and to Mr. Kajihiro for exposing the truth, we now know that DU was used in Hawaii by the US military, and that it has been contaminating us through the air we breath and the water we drink - for over 40 years!
Army Contradictions:
In April 2008, former Schofield Barracks, Hawaii garrison commander and current IMCOM Pacific Region Deputy Director, COL Howard J. Killian III says that a shipping list showed that only 714 of the spotting rounds were sent to Hawai’i between 1962 and 1968. In February 2009 Killian says that although records show 714 spotting rounds used in Davy Crockett weapons systems were shipped to Hawaii in the 1960s, Killian said the types of exercises conducted at PTA would require the firing of at least 2,050 such spotting rounds.
The Army originally stated that the Davy Crockett weapon system was used in training in Hawaii up until 1968. During oral arguments on January 13, 2010 Hawaii petitioner Isaac Harp stated that License SUB-459 (under which the the Atomic Regulatory Agency licensed the Army to use the Davy Crockett DU M101 spotting rounds) had expired on October 31, 1964. Harp further stated that any use or possession of DU in Hawaii after that date was a violation of law, including the possession of DU presently in Hawaii. Lt. Col., Kent Herring, Chief of the Environmental Litigation Branch for the Army responded by stating that the Army had stopped using the Davy Crockett weapon system prior to the expiration of the license.
First the Army denies for over 40-years that they ever possessed DU in Hawaii. Suddenly they’re finding shipping records and dates that their use of DU stopped? It would take an extremely gullible person to believe anything the Army, in fact all US armed forces say or deny regarding their activities in Hawaii, which to the US Department of Defense is just another outpost for wargames…

In a paper written by Leonard A. Dietz in 1996 and updated in 1999 titled “Airborne Transport of Uranium Particles,” Dietz a technician at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, New York wrote,
“A total of 16 air filters at three different locations covering 25 weeks of exposure from May through October 1979 were analyzed; all contained trace amounts of DU. Three of these air filters were exposed for four weeks each at a site 26 miles (42 km) northwest of the National Lead Industries plant. This is by no means the maximum fallout distance for DU aerosol particles.”
At the time the filters were exposed, the National Lead Industries plant was fabricating DU penetrators and airplane counterweights. Check out that date, 1979! For 30-years it was known that airborne transport of DU was possible over great distances. We can’t claim that the military lied to us about this, they just didn’t tell us!
In Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter No. 169, Arthur N. Bernklau, Executive Director of Veterans for Constitutional Law in New York, stated,
“This malady (from uranium munitions), that thousands of our military have suffered and died from, has finally been identified as the cause of this sickness, eliminating the guessing. Out of the 580,400 soldiers who served in the first Gulf War, of them, 11,000 are now dead! By the year 2000, there were 325,000 on Permanent Medical Disability.”
This group of soldiers was made up of primarily young healthy men and women near or at the prime of their lives. Their lives and those closest to them were destroyed because the US Depertment of Defense failed to inform and prepare these soldiers for the dangers of DU. Dangers that the US Department of Defense was fully aware of!
In any war where DU munitions are used both sides suffer heavy suffering and casualties. Many casualties will strike after the war is long forgotten. Descendants of contaminated soldiers and civilians from will suffer from mutations including severe birth defects. And the environment where such wars are waged will remain contaminated for billions of years…

Most of our information is from non-government sources – why you might ask. The answer is simple, because the government has continually lied to the public and contradicts their own documents to hide the truth! Below are just a speck of examples of what government documents say and what the government tells the public.
What Government Documents Admit
“Short-term effects of high doses can result in death, while long-term effects of low doses have been implicated in cancer.”
“Aerosol DU exposures to soldiers on the battlefield could be significant with potential radiological and toxicological effects.”
From the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) report, included as Appendix D of AMMCOM’s Kinetic Energy Penetrator Long Term Strategy Study, Danesi, July 1990. This report was completed six months before Desert Storm.
“If DU enters the body, it has the potential to generate significant medical consequences. The risks associated with DU in the body are both chemical and radiological.”
“Personnel inside or near vehicles struck by DU penetrators could receive significant internal exposures.”
From the Army Environmental Policy Institute (AEPI), Health and Environmental Consequences of Depleted Uranium Use in the U.S. Army, June 1995
“Inhaled insoluble oxides stay in the lungs longer and pose a potential cancer risk due to radiation. Ingested DU dust can also pose both a radioactive and a toxicity risk.”
Operation Desert Storm: Army Not Adequately Prepared to Deal With Depleted Uranium Contamination, United States General Accounting Office (GAO/NSIAD-93-90), January 1993, pp. 17-18.
What the Government Is Telling Us
“The Committee concludes that it is unlikely that health effects reports by Gulf War Veterans today are the result of exposure to depleted uranium during the Gulf war.”
From the Final Report: Presidential Advisory Committee of Gulf War Veterans Illnesses, December 1996.
The US government continues to deceive the public about the dangers of Depleted Uranium although reports from two decades ago acknowledge Depleted Uranium Dangers!_______________________________________________________________________
